CHAPTER SIX

Varan limped up to the door and knocked. He didn’t much care for what it was he supposed to be doing, but after spending three days hiding out in the woods with Shane, watching the town for signs of Farrell, he was just glad to be anywhere else. Never in his life had he heard anyone complain so much about something that was their own idea.

Not that it had been a bad one. They had observed Farrell coming and going from this house with a young woman. He slept elsewhere, but judging by the amount of time the two spent together, and a quick kiss they had shared at the door before parting the night before, it was obvious something was going on between them.

Shane was of the opinion that they shouldn’t try to confront Farrell face on. She’d pulled that off before because he was unsuspecting. They would need a different approach this time.

And so, there stood Varan at the door to the girl’s house, having waited until her mother left before going up to knock. It was Varan because Farrell knew both Shane and Mercer, and it was possible he would be able to sense Amara’s magic. Thus Varan was the logical, albeit reluctant, choice to go in case the other man showed up unexpectedly.

The door opened and the girl smiled uncertainly at Varan. Behind her, a little boy sat at the table with a worn book laid out in front of him. “Hello,” she said. “Can I help you?”

“Yes, miss, you can, if you will,” Varan said. “You see, I’ve fallen on bad times and well ...” He worked on mustering up an expression of humble shame. “I’ve been walking for days and I’ve no coin left for a place to sleep, or food. If you might indulge me a glass of water, I would be most appreciative.”

“Of course.” She stepped back, holding the door open. “Come in. Have a seat at the table.”

The boy looked up at his approach. “Hi, I’m Mycah. What’s your name?”

“Varan.” He sat, stretching his bad leg out in front of him. “What are you reading there?”

“A book about pirates,” Mycah said. “Have you ever seen one? We have one here, even though he keeps saying he’s not.”

“Mycah.” The girl brought a glass of water to Varan. “That’s enough. Go to your room.”

The little boy sighed and rolled his eyes, but gathered up his book and trudged off as he’d been told.

“Cute kid.” Varan sipped the water. “Your brother?”

“Cousin.” She took up Mycah’s vacated seat. “I’m Liese, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you Liese. And thank you, for the water. It’s always nice to meet a kind stranger.” He sat the cup on the table. “What was the boy saying about a pirate?”

“Oh.” She waved the question away. “Nothing but a child’s fancy. Mycah has an overly active imagination as it is, and that book hasn’t helped.” She smiled, but it looked forced. “Where did you say you came from?”

“I didn’t.” Varan ran his finger around the rim of the glass.
